These traditional Crucian-style market baskets represent the Shoe Baskets of the Hebrides and the Melon Baskets of the Appalachia area. Ancestors of Virgin Islanders used them to carry produce and provisions on market day in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Today, the technique for handcrafting baskets is passed down from generation to generation. 

Each basket is one of a kind and includes the name of the crafter. This black and red basket was crafted by Carla and features a real driftwood handle. Measuring approximately 15" x 11" x 10"
