"As a medical and scientific illustrator for many years, and a long-time scuba diver, my appreciation for the beauty and structure in nature is deeply felt. Having studied both human anatomy and biology. I find it fascinating how patterns are often repeated throughout the natural world. For example, the branching patter of trees, the veins of butterfly wings, the bronchioles in our lungs and the arteries in our bodies are virtually the same in patter and proportion. It's my goal to "zoom in" on a life form to highlight the incredible richness of design, shape, texture and color that exists in these beautiful creatures.
How I work.
Whenever possible I work from actual specimens. To begin, I create a tightly drawn pencil sketch of the specimen, which is then scanned into my Mac. I use the drawing as a template to create an entirely new, full-color rendering of the art on-screen, by painting via a Wacom digitizing tablet and stylus, just as one would use an airbrush.
The same mental processes that are used in traditional media are employed in the creation of digital art. Instead of spraying or brushing paint, I'spray" pixels, with every pixel on the virtual canvas created from scratch. Reproductions of traditional media art are made by scanning or photographing the original, thus converting the natural media into pixels. As a digital artist, I skip the middle man (the scanning process) and go right to pixels. This provides the freedom to experiment with color and composition in the achievement of my mental vision of the final piece. Each rendering takes well over 100 hours to create, as the process is tedious and exacting. The end result is something that i hope you find beautiful and interesting."
